Was thinking about this last place I worked, where quite a few laptops got
Since most home computers are connected to the Internet, it shouldn't be too
difficult to write something that would report the computer's IP address to a
website each time it connects. Then it's mainly a question of asking the ISP
if they can put a finger on which customer was using that IP at that time,
which most will do if there's a criminal investigation involved.
Only works if the HD isn't wiped, of course. But then, my guess is that most
thieves wouldn't know how anyway.
