Why do I see this when I happened to need to run CHKDSK to restore order to
my operating system:

Volume C: is dirty

When I looked this up, it appears as if it has to do with a network-type
operation, where a volume has been shut down for some reason, and there is
information that has been saved to be picked up by the network later.  This
is one free-standing computer that has Microsoft Security Essentials running.
