I get this messagebox whenever I try to login:
Windows Product Activation
Some system files are missing or damaged. You cannot log on at this
time. Please use your installation CD to reinstall or repair Windows. Error
My only choice is to hit "OK," which bounces me back to the login screen.
Searching the web and Usenet for this error message finds lots of similar
stories but no solutions. No luck with the MSKB.
Background: I upgraded this machine last week. The first time I booted up
post-upgrade, WPA said I'd need to re-activate. My network drivers weren't
installed yet, so I put it off. My understanding is there's a 3-day deadline
-- fine, but I need a way out of this!
Machine is (was?) running Win2k3 SP1 + all critical updates. Tried booting
to Safe Mode: same error. Tried a repair install: ditto. I'm pretty sure
there's no hardware problem that would cause file corruption -- I've run
several hours each of memtest86 & the HD manufacturer's drive fitness test.
Where do I go from here?
