Here's the problem: Inherited a network when brought on to support a small
business. They have been having network problems, but only with their
internal network shares. Going out to the Internet seems to perform as
expected. The network breaks down as this:
Server 1- Supposed to be the Domain Controller. However it is only running
Domain Controller service, file sharing and Printer sharing. NO DNS and no
DHCP services. This I think is the root of the problem.
Server 2- Just a file server. Business critical data and apps reside here,
so it is only a File Server. This is where the problem begins- connections
being made to this server's shared folders are a) really slow or b) dropped
altogether.
Internal cllients are a mix of laptops and desktops all XP SP2. About 20
systems altogether.
There are two wireless access points with static IP addresses.
They run a Domain environment.
I think I need to reinstall the DNS and DHCP services and route all traffic
through Server 1 using RRAS. And now the question: What would be the best way
for me to get this done? I realize a detailed explaination can't happen in
the newsgroups, but I am hoping someone will be able to point me to some good
resources that can help resolve this problem- without destroying and
recreating the domain. My main concerns are not taking down the domain and
recreating it because then I would nee to rejoin all the computers and the
possiblitiy of more down time does not sound appetizing.
