| Subject: | File Sharing in Workgroup |

I'm pretty good with desktop support but don't know much about
servers. My boss asked me to take a new computer with Windows Server
2003 to a building not yet on our network, install an accounting
package, and share the databases with the three other local machines
running XP Pro.
I added a new server role: "file server" and enabled all permissions
on the directory (both Share and Security). Then I went to one of the
client machines and tried to map a drive to the shared directory. I
could see the new server in the workgroup but could not get to the
shared directory. Why not?
In order to get to the shared files I created a new user on the server
and gave the account rights to the shared directory. Then I went back
to the client machine, tried to map to the shared drive, right-clicked
on explore, and logged in as the new user with remember password
checked. Then I was able to use the mapped drive.
Surely there must be a better way to achieve what I needed. Someone
please enlighten me.
